Historian Reflects on a Changed Compton

Stanford Professor Al Camarillo wants people to know his hometown, Compton, is more than the stereotypes and crime statistics that have plagued the city. In his forthcoming book he traces his family’s footprint in the city to 1914, and reveals that while much has changed throughout 100 years and since the time he grew up in the 50s, the city still represents a place where newcomers seek opportunity. From a majority white community to one that is primarily black, to now one that is mostly Latino, Compton has endured dramatic racial shifts. But by taking lessons from the past, Camarillo says, the community can build bridges today.

Dodgers’ Opening Day

The question of who owns the Dodgers is in limbo. The husband and wife duo Frank and Jamie McCourt are battling it out in court to find out who actually owns the Dodgers. Reporter Jessica Flores talks about whether this battle will affect the playing field, and the debut of the franchise’s “Doyer dogs.”

Downey Mayor Wants Tesla

Tesla Motors is looking for a facility where its next line of electric cars will be made. One of the sites being considered is the former 80 acre NASA plant in Downey, which could bring thousands of jobs to this East Los Angeles community. Downey Mayor Mario Guerra is making moves to secure a lease between Tesla and the private company that owns the site.

Orange County Ortega Fire Rages On

The Orange County Ortega fire continues to burn this afternoon, after 300 firefighters were sent out to contain the blaze.  Jessica Flores spoke to the Orange County fire captain, as he was on his way to the scene.

MTA Proposes Light Rail Instead of Bus Line for South LA

MTA Released a report saying a light rail is the best choice for a new transit system in the Crenshaw Corridor. The project will cost 1.7 billion dollars. Some say a bus system is a better option because it will be cheaper and even faster.

LA Substitute Teachers Protest UTLA Deal

Los Angeles substitute teachers staged a “die-in” to protest the deal made between UTLA president A.J. Duffy and LAUSD Superintendent Cortines that gives pink slipped junior teacher priority for substituting jobs over more senior substitute teachers.
